The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has congratulated the management and staff of Daily Times on the newspaper’s centenary anniversary, describing the milestone as a remarkable testament to resilience, relevance, and dedicated service to journalism and nation-building.

Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, made this known in a statement issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of one of Nigeria’s oldest newspapers.

According to Ike, Daily Times has played a significant role in shaping public opinion, promoting democratic values, and strengthening journalism practice in Nigeria over the decades. She noted that the newspaper’s rich legacy remains a major reference point in the history of the Nigerian media industry.

“One hundred years is not just a number; it is a testimony to resilience, relevance, and service to the Nigerian nation and the media profession,” she stated.

The NUJ chairman said the centenary celebration provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of the media institution but also to reflect on the responsibilities journalists bear in fostering an informed and democratic society.

She urged journalists and media organisations across the country to recommit themselves to the principles of truth, fairness, accuracy, and ethical conduct, particularly at a time when the media landscape is undergoing rapid transformation driven by technology and digital platforms.

Ike stressed that credible and responsible journalism remains essential in combating misinformation and strengthening public trust in the media.

Commending Daily Times for commencing its centenary activities with a press conference, she described the media as a vital instrument for public enlightenment, accountability, and national development.

She further encouraged the organisation to use the milestone celebration as a platform to embrace innovation and chart a sustainable path for future growth while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.

Reaffirming the commitment of the NUJ FCT Council to collaborate with institutions that have contributed significantly to the growth of journalism and democracy in Nigeria, Ike expressed optimism that Daily Times would continue to make meaningful contributions to the media industry and national development.

She wished the newspaper greater success, renewed vision, and lasting impact as it begins its second century of operation.
Daily Times, founded in 1926, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers and remains a prominent symbol of the country’s media heritage.
