All is now set for the grand finale of the Opeifa Cup Handball Competition, holding today, Friday, in Lagos State.
The much-anticipated final marks the climax of weeks of exciting contests among top handball teams drawn from across Lagos and neighbouring states. This year’s edition is particularly significant as it celebrates the 10th Year Anniversary and the 7th Edition of the prestigious tournament, founded in honour of Dr. Kayode Isiak Opeifa.
It may interest you to know that the handball players participating in this year’s event are drawn from various secondary schools across Lagos State, showcasing the competition’s deep grassroots reach. According to Mrs. Adeola Opeifa, wife of Dr. Kayode Opeifa, who herself is a former handball player and former Chairperson of the Lagos State Handball Association, the talents discovered from the tournament will form part of the pool of players who will represent Lagos—and indeed Nigeria—at national and international levels.
“The Opeifa Cup provides a strong platform for nurturing young handball talents from secondary schools. Many of these students have shown exceptional skills and will soon be seen competing at higher levels,” Mrs. Opeifa said.
The Opeifa Handball Competition has become one of the most respected grassroots sports tournaments in Lagos, promoting youth development, discipline, and unity through sports. Over the years, it has served as a launchpad for emerging athletes who have gone on to achieve greater success in their sporting careers.
According to the organizers, all logistics, security, and event preparations have been completed to ensure a smooth and colourful closing ceremony. The final is expected to draw dignitaries from the sports community, government agencies, and the private sector.
Speaking ahead of the final, a member of the organizing committee expressed excitement over the progress made so far. “The Opeifa Cup has become more than just a handball event—it’s a platform for youth empowerment and talent discovery. We are proud to mark ten years of consistent sports promotion through Dr. Kayode Opeifa’s vision,” the official stated.
As the finalists prepare to battle for the coveted Opeifa Cup trophy, fans are eagerly anticipating a thrilling encounter that will cap off a decade of excellence and sporting legacy in Lagos State.
