Engineer Stanley Lebechi Mbam, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works, has described the ongoing Vanco Flyover and Tunnel Project as a major milestone in Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s transformational agenda for the state.
Speaking during an inspection at the construction site on Tuesday, the Commissioner expressed gratitude to God and praised the Governor’s “lion heart and visionary leadership,” which he said has brought about remarkable innovation and development across the state.
“This flyover is one of His Excellency’s signature projects featuring a one-kilometre tunnel and a 28-span bridge,” Mbam revealed. “It is a bold project many thought impossible, but with God and a focused leadership, it is becoming a reality.”
He said the project reflects the administration’s alignment with the People’s Charter of Needs, and that ongoing works at the flyover represent the government’s readiness to elevate Ebonyi’s capital city to modern standards, capable of competing with other urban centres in Nigeria.
“We are standing right at the heart of the tunnel, where the foundation for the central roundabout is being laid. This will serve as a major connecting point for roads around the Vanco axis,” he explained.
On the quality of work, the Commissioner expressed full confidence, citing rigorous testing procedures, daily supervision, and strict compliance with engineering specifications.
“We have a quality control team on the ground, ensuring every material from concrete to reinforcement and aggregates is tested and meets design standards. I’m 100% satisfied.”
The project, which is expected to be completed within 24 months, has already overcome key engineering challenges, including rock blasting during excavation. Despite the rainy season slowing some aspects of construction, Mbam affirmed the timeline remains realistic.
Justifying the scale of the project, he said: “Ebonyi has come of age. We need to upgrade our capital, attract investment, and open up access routes. Projects like this are not just for now — they’re for the future.”
He concluded by urging continued support from citizens and stakeholders, promising that the administration would not relent until Ebonyi achieves its full potential.
