The Federal Government has intensified efforts to ensure the safe return of Nigerians in South Africa, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approving five evacuation flights to airlift citizens who have indicated interest in returning home.

The development was disclosed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who confirmed that the screening exercise being conducted by Nigeria’s Mission in Pretoria has been extended to June 10, 2026, to accommodate more Nigerians seeking evacuation.

According to him, over 500 Nigerian nationals have already been screened and cleared for the exercise, reflecting the significant number of citizens eager to take advantage of the government’s intervention.

The approved evacuation operation will be carried out by Air Peace, with the first flight expected to depart Johannesburg on Monday evening, subject to the necessary permits and operational clearances being secured.

The inaugural flight is expected to transport about 270 passengers back to Nigeria, marking the beginning of what officials describe as a coordinated humanitarian effort to assist affected citizens.

The decision to approve five separate flights underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad. It also highlights the growing role of diplomatic missions in responding to the needs of citizens during challenging circumstances.

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has continued to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure a smooth screening and evacuation process.

For many Nigerians awaiting their return, the announcement comes as welcome relief and a source of renewed hope. Families back home have also expressed excitement over the development, viewing it as evidence of government’s responsiveness to the concerns of its citizens regardless of their location.

Observers note that the exercise demonstrates the importance of proactive diplomacy and effective coordination between government agencies, foreign missions, and private sector partners such as Air Peace.

The successful implementation of the evacuation programme is expected to further strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to provide assistance to its nationals abroad when the need arises.

As preparations continue for the first flight, attention remains focused on the final clearance processes and logistics arrangements. Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora will be watching closely as the evacuation operation gets underway, hopeful that it will provide safe passage and a fresh beginning for hundreds of returning citizens.

The announcement has been widely welcomed as a positive development and a reassuring reminder that the welfare of Nigerians remains a priority on the government’s agenda.
