The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has concluded its 2nd statutory meeting in Owerri, Imo State, with a strong call for urgent action to address the rising wave of insecurity and deteriorating road infrastructure in Nigeria.

*Gratitude to Imo State Government
The NEC expressed profound gratitude to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, for hosting the meeting and extending warm hospitality to women journalists from across the 36 states and the FCT.

Condemnation of Insecurity
The meeting strongly condemned the increasing wave of insecurity in the country, particularly the recent killings and abductions in Kwara and Kebbi States, and the rising cases of child kidnapping and rape of minors. The NEC called on security agencies to act swiftly to rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

Concern over Poor Road Infrastructure
The NEC expressed deep concern over the deplorable state of Nigeria’s major highways, which have become “death traps” and expose citizens to heightened risks of robbery, kidnapping, and fatal accidents. The association called on the Federal and State Governments to urgently rehabilitate and reconstruct major roads and strengthen highway security patrols.

Solidarity with Victims of Insecurity
The NEC stood in firm solidarity with mothers and families whose children have been abducted, harmed, or traumatized by these heinous crimes, insisting that every Nigerian child deserves full protection and dignity.

Partnership with NUJ and Other Stakeholders
The NEC appreciated the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and his delegation for their solidarity with NAWOJ.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with the NUJ and other media stakeholders to elevate professional standards, promote ethical journalism, and amplify the leadership and impact of women journalists nationwide.

*Commemoration of 16 Days of Activism Against GBV
The NEC noted that the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence would commence on November 25, and called on all chapters to participate actively in the global campaign.

The meeting was chaired by the National Chairperson, Comrade Aisha K. Bura, with the theme “Amplifying Change: The Media, Legislation, and the Advancement of Women.” The guest lecturer, Chinelo Emeghara Esq., Clerk and Head of the Service, Imo State House of Assembly, urged women journalists to increase awareness on legislations enacted to encourage implementation for the benefit of women and children.

The communiqué was drafted by a committee comprising Comrade Adeola Adekunle, Comrade Chinwe Imo-Eze Onwosi, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, Comrade Uduak Ekong, and Felicia Amos Dauda.
