The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muktar Betara Aliyu, MON, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving and flagging off the dualisation of the Gombe–Biu Highway, describing the project as a landmark infrastructure initiative that will significantly boost economic growth and development across the North-East region.

Betara said the road project reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure deficits and unlocking the economic potential of communities that have long suffered neglect despite their strategic importance to national development.
The lawmaker’s commendation follows the Federal Government’s commencement of the ₦1.245 trillion project, which forms part of the larger Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Highway corridor. The road is regarded as one of the most important transportation routes in northern Nigeria, linking several states and serving as a major channel for commerce, agriculture and the movement of people.
According to Betara, previous administrations failed to give adequate attention to the deteriorating state of the highway, a situation that hampered economic activities and increased the hardship faced by commuters and businesses. He noted that President Tinubu’s intervention demonstrates a clear resolve to promote balanced development and deliver on the promises of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He stressed that beyond road construction, the project holds immense economic significance for the people of Borno, Gombe and neighbouring states. The dual carriageway is expected to improve the transportation of agricultural produce, livestock and manufactured goods, reduce travel time, lower transportation costs and stimulate investment opportunities across the region.
Betara further observed that the highway will strengthen regional integration by connecting communities and markets, enhancing access to trade routes and creating a more conducive environment for business growth.
He added that thousands of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be generated during the construction phase, while the long-term benefits will include increased commercial activities and improved livelihoods for residents.
Describing the project as a major step towards the economic revitalisation of the North-East, the lawmaker expressed confidence that the upgraded highway would improve security, attract investors and open up new opportunities for growth and prosperity along the corridor.
The Federal Government officially flagged off the project on June 4, 2026, with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, describing it as one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Tinubu administration.
Stakeholders across the region have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the project will deliver a modern transportation network capable of driving sustainable development and economic transformation in the North-East.
