By Remi Johnson

Director Department of Security Services Federal Capital Territory Administration, Mr Adamu Gwary has reiterated commitment of it’s Department to sustain the fight against one-chance activities and other criminal elements in the territory.

Gwary stated this when the combined ministerial Taskforce team on operation ‘Keep Abuja Safe’ raided beggars off the street and one- chance syndicates in hotspots at Area 1, National mosque and Banex junction in Abuja.

Gwary, who was represented by the Secretary, Command and Control Center FCTA, Dr Peter Olumuji, said that the operations will be sustained throughout the festive season and beyond.

He warned beggars disguising as informants and one – chance operators posing security threat, causing harm and dispossessing unsuspecting residents in the territory, to desist from such acts or risk being arrested.

According to him, the arrested beggars are in the custody of Social Development Secretariat for further action.

Gwary also explained that some of the vehicles that were impounded by the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services were without a plate number, some with one plate number, some not roadworthy, hinted that the combined Taskforce team also arrested a certain driver, impersonating as a policeman with a dangerous weapon.

For safety purposes, the FCT Security Services Department advised commuters to be vigilant, take cognisance of the car’s number plate and brand of vehicle boarded.

“Before you enter any vehicle, send the details to someone, so that if anything happens to you, we can quickly track that number and apprehend the suspect,

“You know the issue of one chance has been on the front burner in FCT. This operation was designed to support ongoing efforts by the Nigeria police and other security agencies to rid the city of criminals posing as commercial drivers.

“All through the festive period till January next year we are going to sustain the enforcement. This is because, if we do not sustain it, criminal elements will capitalize on any little gap to continue their nefarious activities,

“The Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, has directed that the operation be sustained so that every commuter in the FCT will be able to move safely, from one point to the other, without any form of harassment,

“We have also apprehended a suspect for impersonating the Nigeria police. The suspect was caught with a very long locally fabricated knife inside his vehicle.
He claimed to be a policeman but from what we have seen, that may not be true. So, we have handed him over to the police for profiling and further investigation” Gwary said.

On her part, Head of Operations, DRTS, Mrs Deborah Osho, who said over 30 vehicles have been impounded within the week, expressed the readiness of the Taskforce not only to apprehend one chance operators, but also to destabilise their operations and make the city very hot for them to operate.

Also, A Social Welfare Officer, Social Development Secretariat, Mr Mustapha Yunusa, confirmed that the activities of street beggars has reduced drastically since the operation began, and added that the apprehended beggars that are trainable would be trained in various vocational skills and rehabilitated, while the ones that are not trainable would be repatriated and re- unite with their families.
