The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining robust relations with the Republic of Ghana, including at the citizen-to-citizen level. This was made known by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during her ongoing two-day visit to Ghana.
The Minister’s visit is aimed at addressing the situation of Nigeria-Ghana citizens’ relations and meeting with relevant stakeholders at both ends. She has met with the President of Ghana, the country’s Foreign Minister, traditional rulers, and Nigerians resident in the country, to ensure that the life, property, and businesses of Nigerians living in Ghana are safe and protected.
As part of her engagements, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu met with the Inspector General of Police Ghana, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the Kotoka Accra International Airport. She also had meetings with Ghanaian officials and leaders of the Nigeria community, where she discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and protect the interests of Nigerians in Ghana.
The Minister’s visit is a proactive step towards protecting the interests of Nigerians living in Ghana. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the rights and welfare of its citizens are protected, both at home and abroad.
The visit comes on the heels of a video that trended with Ghanaian youths protesting and declaring that Nigerians must go. The Federal Government has taken swift action to address the situation and ensure that the relations between the two countries are not strained.
