Governor Agbu Kefas has approved the constitution of a 14 member task force on the suspension of mining activities across the State.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yusufu Sanda, said that the Committee has Brigadier General Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa (Rtd) as Chairman and Major Ishaq Soje Mafindi (Rtd) as Vice Chairman, while the committee members include; Lcpl Akpana Godwin, Private Ofoli Omini, and Private Ofoli Eket from the Army as members.
ASP Adamu Danya, Abdul Direba, and Habu Ciroma from the Nigerian Police and Supt Haruna Yahaya, ASCI Bello Danjuma Yusuf, and ASCII from the NSCDC.
Others include; DS Useni, AA, Girgir, and HN Vanaruwa from the DSS.
Recall that Governor Kefas sign executive order prohibiting illegal mining and it’s activities across the state.
Governor Kefas Agbu while signing the executive order prohibiting mining and mining activities across the state, said that it a pressing issue that has been plaguing the state.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the need for immediate action to curb the rampant mining and illegal activities that have been wreaking havoc on our environment, our communities and our economy.
According to him, as the Governor of Taraba State, it is his solemn duty to protect the well-being of his citizens and preserve the precious resources that nature has bestowed upon the state.
“Our state is blessed with abundant mineral wealth, but this blessing should not come at the cost of our environment and the livelihoods of our people.
“Over the years, we have witnessed a surge in mining activities, both legal and illegal, which have caused significant damage to our ecosystems.
He disclose that the unregulated extraction of minerals have led to deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution and loss of biodiversity in the state.
“Our rivers have become contaminated, affecting the health of our people and jeopardizing our agricultural activities.
“Illegal mining in particular, has become a cancer eating away at the very fabric of our society.
“It has led to the exploitation of our vulnerable communities, increased crime rates, and contributed to social unrest.
“The revenue that should have been channeled into public welfare and infrastructure development has been siphoned away, leaving our people in dire need.
“Therefore in the best interest of our state and its future generations,
“I am signing this executive order for the immediate suspension of all illegal mining and illegal mining activities in Taraba state.
According to him, the decision has not been taken lightly, but it is a necessary step to preserve the environment and ensure sustainable development.
“This executive order will serve as a strong message to those who have been engaging in illegal mining activities.
“We will no longer tolerate the wanton destruction of our natural resources and the exploitation of our people.
He said that the law enforcement agencies will be empowered to take strict action against anyone found in violating the order.
“We will work hand in hand with relevant stakeholders to endure a smooth transition and explore alternative livelihood options for those affected.
“I am aware that this decision will have short-time economic implications, but is essential for the long-term prosperity and well-being of our state.
“We will not abandon our commitment to economic growth, but it must be achieved through sustainable means.
He pointed out that government will encourage responsible mining practices and adhere to stringent environmental regulations and prioritize the welfare of respective communities.
He urge the federal government and development partners to support the state government efforts in restoring the damage caused by years of unchecked mining activities.
“We need their assistance in implementing, Comprehensive reforestation program, Providing alternative employment opportunities and strengthening our capacity for effective regulation and monitoring
He said that as Chief Executive of the state, he is committed to protecting the environment, preserving the resources, and ensuring the well-being of the people, adding that the suspension of mining and illegal activities is a critical step towards achieving these objectives.
“Together, let us embark on this sustainable development and build a brighter future for Taraba State – he said.
