Greenfields Metal Limited, operators of the Ekubara mining site in Amaonye, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has approved the installation of 50 solar-powered streetlights in its host community.

The project, estimated at ₦20 million, was unveiled on Wednesday by the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Chief Henry Ahanotu, during a grand reception organised in his honour by the people of Amaonye.

The ceremony also marked the resolution of a long-standing dispute between the community and the company, which both parties described as the dawn of “peace and partnership.”

Speaking at the event, Ahanotu said the intervention was part of Greenfields’ corporate social responsibility and a gesture of appreciation to the people for embracing dialogue and cooperation.

“As a mark of goodwill, Greenfields Metal Limited is donating ₦2 million to Amaonye community today, in addition to the installation of 50 units of solar-powered streetlights across the village,” Ahanotu announced.

“We want to assure you that work on the project, valued at ₦20 million, will commence immediately.”

He described the peace accord as a turning point in the company’s relationship with its hosts and pledged continuous support for initiatives that promote social progress and better living standards.

“This reconciliation is not just an end to hostilities but the beginning of a brighter partnership. We are determined to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth and social wellbeing of Amaonye,” he added.

Community leaders welcomed the gesture, pledging their support for peaceful mining operations.

Mr. Ndubueze John, Chairman of the Amaonye Development Union (ADU), said the presence of Greenfields would spur social and economic activities in the area.

Chief Sunday Chukwu noted that the solar lights would improve security and reduce crime, while Chief Uchechukwu Okoro stressed that the project would boost night-time economic activities and benefit women traders and students who study at night.

Former Ivo Legislative Council leader, Chief Ejiofor Ndukwe, urged the company to sustain dialogue with its hosts, adding that “the peace we have achieved today should be nurtured to make Amaonye a model mining host community in Ebonyi.”

Other community members, including Mrs. Juliet Okorie, Mr. Azubuike Chukwu, and Mr. Christopher Aja, also commended the initiative and assured the company of their cooperation.

The colourful event featured traditional dances, music, and prayers for peace and prosperity, signalling the start of a renewed bond between Greenfields Metals and the Amaonye community.
