Leveraging on Professional Development of Members and NAWOJ Coverage to Reduce Cases of SGBV

Women Journalists in Nigeria have been described as professionally equipped and capable of reducing incidences of Sexual and Gender Based Violence(SGBV) through their continuous and sustained reportage.

Aisha Ibrahim Bura, National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, made this disclosure during a one day training on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention, Response and Mainstreaming in Gombe State, part of Activities to mark this year’s 16 Days of Activism organized by NAWOJ in collaboration with Mercy Corps, the Association’s International Partner.

The NAWOJ National Chairperson stated that the association has fully integrated in its service modules training and retraining of women journalists in order to ensure that issues of critical concern affecting women and the girl-child, and family institutions as a whole are duly given deserved awareness in view of positive responses in tackling them.

She commended the efforts of women journalists in raising the existing bar in Nation wide coverage of Sexual and Gender Based Violence not only in Nigeria but globally and urged them not to rest on their oars.

Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim Bura also expressed appreciations to the facilitating organization and announced the readiness of NAWOJ to sign an MOU with Mercy Corps to ensure the training of members is replicated in the six zones for better output.

Nurein Abdulfatah, Deputy Chief of “Feed the Future Nigeria” Rural Residence Activity, Mercy Corps Nigeria, stated that members of NAWOJ, as Information Managers, should properly deploy their various media platforms to sensitize the populace on Gender Based Violence with a view to nipping the malaise in the bud
