The long-awaited reconstruction of the 122-kilometre Mando–Birnin Gwari Road has moved closer to reality as Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, met with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and the Minister of State for Works, Rt. Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo,to conclude arrangements ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the major infrastructure project.
The meeting, according to a statement by the Kaduna State Governor, focused on ensuring a smooth flag-off and establishing strategies for the timely delivery of the strategic highway, which is expected to transform transportation, security and economic activities across Birnin Gwari and surrounding communities.
Governor Sani described the project as a critical intervention that would restore a vital economic corridor, improve regional connectivity, enhance the movement of people and goods, and stimulate agriculture and commerce in one of Kaduna State’s most important areas.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the project and providing the resources required for its execution, while reaffirming Kaduna State’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government to ensure successful completion.”The
reconstruction of this road is not just about infrastructure; it is about restoring confidence, opening economic opportunities and improving the lives of our people,” the governor stated.
A Road That Carries More Than Vehicles for many
years, the Mando–Birnin Gwari axis has been more than just a road connecting communities. It has been a major economic route linking Kaduna metropolis with Birnin Gwari Local Government Area and other parts of the North-West.
However, the poor condition of the road, combined with persistent security challenges has turned what should be a major economic artery into a source of anxiety for many travellers, commercial drivers and residents.
The road has repeatedly come under the spotlight due to attacks by armed bandits and kidnappers who have exploited the difficult terrain and surrounding forests to carry out criminal activities. Security concerns along the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna and related highways have previously included kidnappings, armed robbery and attacks on travellers.
For many commuters, travelling through the route often comes with fear and uncertainty, with some motorist forced to reconsider journeys, avoid certain hours of travel or seek alternative routes because of security risks.
In recent years, Birnin Gwari communities have suffered repeated attacks linked to armed groups, with reports of killings, abductions and attacks on farmers and travellers.
Beyond transportation, stakeholders believe the reconstruction of the Mando–Birnin Gwari Road could play a major role in addressing some of the security challenges facing the area.
A well-constructed highway can improve the movement of security personnel, enhance emergency response time and make it more difficult for criminals to operate freely.
For years, residents and community leaders have argued that insecurity thrives where communities are isolated, roads are inaccessible and security agencies face difficulties reaching affected areas quickly.
The improved road network is therefore expected to support government’s wider efforts to restore peace and encourage residents who have abandoned farming and businesses due to insecurity to return to their livelihoods.
Birnin Gwari is known for its agricultural potential, with many residents depending on farming, livestock and trading activities. However, insecurity has affected agricultural production as many farmers have been forced away from their farmlands.
The completion of the road project could open a new chapter for farmers, traders and investors by providing easier access to markets and reducing transportation challenges. With
