NRC MD Apologizes to Chief Ladi Bala, NUJ Over Harassment…Bala named NRC Ambassador

Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has tendered an unreserved apology to Chief Ladi Bala, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for harassing and intimidating Chief Ladi Bala, a reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), assigned to cover NRC. The incident occurred while Bala was covering the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment. He also announced that she is to become NRC’s Ambassador.

According to reports, Bala was subjected to verbal abuse, with Opeifa using derogatory language and disrupting her live reporting. The NUJ condemned Opeifa’s actions, demanding an immediate and unreserved public apology. At the Press Conference he took responsibility and tendered Apology.

Opeifa’s apology comes after the NUJ’s strong stance against his behavior. The union had called for Opeifa to take responsibility for his actions and apologize for his misconduct. For which he owned up and took responsibility at the World Press briefing on Sunday, 31st August 2025 at the NUJ Press Centre at Utako.

In his apology, Opeifa stated that he had “done the needful” and would focus on his national assignment under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He emphasized his long-standing relationship with the media, noting that the NUJ had previously honored him with an award.

Opeifa chose not to dwell further on the incident, Having apologized prioritizing his duties as NRC MD instead. The apology has been seen as a step towards resolving the matter and moving forward.

The incident highlights the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of journalists, who play a crucial role in holding those in power accountable. Opeifa’s apology is a welcome development.

The Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike noted that the Council has zero tolerance for any form of attacks on its members but had to give the NRC Boss opportunity to apologize in person.

She also announced that moving Forward the NRC Boss would champion the course as Ambassador to put an end to to Harassment of journalists.
