Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre, Dr Emem Omokaro was among eminent Nigerians who received the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Annual Good Governance Awards 2025, to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

Dr Emem Omokaro is recipient of the Award for “INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP” in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
She was selected for opening up “The Silver Economy in Nigeria” through boosting the dignity and wellbeing of Older Persons as well as her transformative Programmes in the field of Ageing.

Other awardees at the Good Governance Awards was the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio who received the award on Legislative Transformation and Efficiency.
Niger and Kebbi States Governors, Executive Secretary of TETFUND, NNPC Limited, National Bureau of Statistics and Construction Giant, Julius Berger.

The Good Governance Awards by the Nigeria Union of Journalists highlight leaders and organisations that have turned policies into tangible progress, proving that accountability is not a myth but a measurable standard.
National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya said, a free press and accountable governance are inseparable and remains the catalyst for good governance as good governance ensures that the dividends of democracy reaches every citizen.

He assured that the Nigeria Union of Journalists remains the cornerstone of democracy, allowing citizens to hold leaders accountable and ensure transparency and accountability in public affairs.
Also awarded at the ceremony were courageous journalists who demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of adversity in the line of duty. Namely; Idibia Gabriel, Matthew Ochei, Lucy Ezeliora, Jide Oyekunle, Ibrahim Isha and Ibrahim Ayyuba Isah.
