By Uchenna Orji

In a bid to have a comprehensive and in- depth study of the state of Nigerian roads and proffer lasting solutions, the Hon. Minister of Works, His Excellency Sen. Engr David Nweze Umahi, FNSE FNATE CON GGCEHF has scheduled a visit to all the 6 Geo- Political Zones of the Nation.

The road infrastructure in the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, Lagos and other States of South West is currently undergoing a thorough inspection by the Hon. Minister himself. He is looking at the details of location of projects, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all the road infrastructure, including bridges flyovers and other engineering projects awarded by the Federal Government under the Federal Ministry of Works.

In his inspection tour yesterday, 30th August,2023, the Hon Minister decried the state of the 3rd Mainland bridge, the Eko bridge and the Carter bridge which are the linking bridges that convey humans, goods and services between the mainland and the island of Lagos State. Eko and Carter currently have heavier vehicular movement from the mainland to the island due to the state of the third Mainland bridge.
The Hon. Minister, during his visit to those locations, assured the people that the Federal Government would give priority attention to the maintenance of those bridges.

The Hon. Minister while inspecting the rehabilitation of the Outer- Marina- Bonny Camp and Eko bridge through Apongbon bridge, the rehabilitation of Ikorodu- Sagamu road, the third Mainland bridge, the Ekoh bridge, and the Carter bridge ( which was built in 1954) also said that private sector participation in the ownership and maintenance of road infrastructure in Nigeria as done in advanced countries would be the way to go.
He said that through the Federal Government’s HDMI PPP arrangement, the private sector/ investors would be engaged to own some roads, maintain it, tone it and ensure that the road is convenient for users.

The Hon Minister is committed to ensuring that the roads have effective solar light ( as he did in Ebonyi State)so that people can safely travel in the night.
