The University of Port Harcourt is set to confer an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc. Honoris Causa) on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Nyesom Wike.

This was disclosed in Abuja when a delegation from the university, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, paid a courtesy visit to Wike, who is also an alumnus of the institution.

Prof. Georgewill explained that the award is part of activities marking the institution’s 50th anniversary, during which distinguished alumni who have rendered exceptional service to society will be honoured.

The Vice Chancellor noted that Dr. Wike is one of the university’s alumni who has not only contributed to the development of the institution but has also consistently made meaningful impacts in national development.

The letter signed by Mrs. Gloria Chindah, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, stated that the honorary award is in recognition of Dr. Wike’s outstanding and visionary leadership, as well as his philanthropic contributions to the development of education and governance in Nigeria.

It noted that the decision was reached at an Extraordinary Meeting of the University Senate held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

According to the letter, the conferment ceremony is scheduled to take place during the institution’s 35th Convocation, set for Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the University’s Convocation Arena, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of UniPort, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, who presented the award notification letter to the FCT Minister, described Dr. Wike as a valuable asset to the university.

In a heartfelt response, the Minister of the FCT, Dr. Nyesom Wike, expressed profound appreciation for the recognition, stating that as a proud alumnus of the University of Port Harcourt, the award holds a special place in his heart.

He reminisced about his academic journey, which began with a degree in Political Science at the university before his transition into the legal profession.

“Some people only know me as a lawyer,” Wike noted. “But it was at the University of Port Harcourt that I first earned my degree in Political Science. It laid the foundation for my career, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

He used the opportunity to acknowledge some of the notable scholars who mentored him and shaped his intellectual path, citing renowned professors such as Prof. Claude Ake, Kena Zimire, and Prof. Emi Adibe, among others.

Wike also reflected on the challenges the university once faced and his personal resolve to contribute to its transformation.

He recalled how, during his tenure as Minister of State for Education, he facilitated the establishment of the Faculty of Law and pledged continuous support to the institution.
