The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has congratulated one of its Board of Trustees members, Comrade Ruth Abubakar, following her emergence as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Billiri East State Constituency seat in the Gombe State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, described the victory as a remarkable achievement not only for women in journalism but also for women in leadership and politics across Nigeria.

In a congratulatory message, Ibrahim praised Ruth Abubakar for her resilience, commitment, and years of service to humanity, noting that her emergence reflects the growing participation of competent women in governance and decision-making processes.

She expressed confidence that the NAWOJ Board of Trustees member would bring integrity, dedication, and grassroots experience to legislative representation if elected in the 2027 polls.

“Our very own Ruth Abubakar has continued to distinguish herself as a woman of courage, vision, and capacity. Her emergence as the PDP candidate for Billiri East is a proud moment for the entire NAWOJ family,” Hajia Ibrahim stated.

The NAWOJ national leadership further commended members of the NAWOJ Gombe State Chapter for their solidarity and support throughout the primary election process, describing their presence as a demonstration of unity and sisterhood within the association.

Reports from the primary election indicated that members of the Gombe State chapter were fully on ground to support Ruth Abubakar during the exercise, which eventually saw her clinch the party’s ticket.

Political observers in Gombe State have described her emergence as a significant boost for women’s political inclusion in the state, especially at a time when calls for greater female representation in elective offices continue to grow.

Supporters and well-wishers have also continued to celebrate the development, expressing optimism that her candidacy would inspire more women to actively participate in politics and public service.

This was contained in a statement signed by Wasilah Ladan, National Secretary.
