In Loving Memory of Elder Ezinne Helen Uche Otu (1945–2026)
Obituary
With a heart filled with gratitude to God and profound appreciation for a life of remarkable sacrifice, faith, service and love, I join the Otu family in celebrating the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of our beloved mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and family matriarch, Elder Ezinne Helen Uche Otu, who peacefully answered the call of her Maker on February 13, 2026, at the age of 80.
Mama was born on December 26, 1945, into the family of Pa Ekuma Udu and Ma Loveth Ugo Egwu Udu of Amangwu Ohachara, Amasiri, in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. As the only daughter among seven children, she was a precious gift to her parents and a cherished sister to her brothers.

From her early years, Mama displayed an uncommon sense of responsibility, compassion and selflessness. She devoted herself to the wellbeing of her family and played a significant role in supporting her parents and helping to nurture her younger brothers.
Although her formal education ended at Standard Six, Mama possessed a wealth of wisdom, determination and entrepreneurial courage that surpassed any academic qualification. She married her beloved husband, Late Pa James Otu Itiri, and their union was blessed with six children—three sons and three daughters.
In 1987, tragedy struck when her husband passed away, only two months after their first child had completed secondary school. At a time when many would have been overwhelmed by despair, Mama demonstrated extraordinary courage. She accepted the enormous responsibility of raising six children alone and became both mother and father to her family.

Through unwavering faith in God, hard work, discipline and perseverance, she successfully raised her children and ensured that all six attained university education. This remains one of the greatest testimonies to her strength, determination and sacrificial love.
Mama was also a remarkable entrepreneur. She established herself as a successful fish trader, travelling to Sapele and Warri to purchase fish for resale at Ahia Eke-Ukwu Market in Ehugbo. Her success, however, was never solely for her personal benefit. She generously encouraged and mentored numerous women from Amasiri to venture into fish trading, helping them to achieve economic independence and improve the lives of their families.
Her entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond fish trading. Mama was a hardworking farmer who cultivated cassava, rice and yam and was also involved in rice milling and palm oil storage. Through diligence, prudent management and resilience, she turned the resources available to her into opportunities for her family and community.
Above all, Mama was a woman of deep and unwavering faith. For more than five decades, she remained a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, serving God with humility, commitment and distinction.
Before her ordination as a Ruling Elder, she served as a dedicated leader of the Women’s Guild, where she championed several developmental initiatives. Her visionary contributions helped strengthen the church, including efforts towards the renovation of the church building and expansion of its nursery and primary school.
Her exemplary character, service to God and commitment to humanity earned her several honours. In 2013, she was bestowed with the prestigious title of Ezinne, in recognition of her virtues, integrity and leadership.
In 2025, the Women Wing of the Amasiri Town Union further honoured her with the title Nneoha of Amasiri during the August Meeting and Homecoming, acknowledging her immense contributions to the development and wellbeing of her community.
One of Mama’s greatest joys was seeing the fruits of her sacrifices. On December 28, 2025, she celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by the family she had built and nurtured—her six children, six children-in-law and twenty-one grandchildren. It was a beautiful celebration of a life that had been defined by sacrifice, faith, resilience, love and accomplishment.
As we mourn her transition, we are comforted by the knowledge that Mama lived a purposeful and impactful life. She taught us by example to trust God completely, work diligently, love sincerely, care for others and serve humanity selflessly.
Her legacy is therefore not only in the children and grandchildren she raised, but also in the countless lives she touched, encouraged, mentored and transformed.
Mama, your footprints are indelibly etched in our hearts. Your sacrifices gave your children a future; your prayers became a shield over your family; your love kept the family united; and your exemplary life will continue to guide generations yet unborn.
As your son-in-law, I consider it a privilege to have known, loved and shared in the warmth of a woman whose strength, wisdom, generosity and faith were truly exceptional.
You were indeed a Rare Woman of Valour—a loving mother, cherished grandmother, admirable mother-in-law, mentor, prayer warrior and an inspiration to all who encountered you.
Though your physical presence will be deeply missed, your memory will remain a blessing and your legacy will continue to speak for you.
Sleep peacefully in the bosom of the Lord until we meet again.
With love and deepest respect,
Ikechukwu Chukwu Idam
