The Abia State Government has taken a significant step towards strengthening social protection with the enactment of the Abia State Senior Citizens Welfare Law, a landmark legislation designed to improve the welfare and quality of life of elderly residents in the state.
Signed into law by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, the legislation establishes a comprehensive framework for the care and protection of senior citizens aged 60 years and above. The law provides for improved access to healthcare services, including free medical care for eligible senior citizens, regular medical check-ups, social welfare support, and the establishment of institutional structures to coordinate programmes for the elderly.

According to the Abia State Government, the new law is intended to build a sustainable social protection system for senior citizens through proper registration, eligibility verification and structured implementation of welfare programmes. Government officials have clarified that the law is not a blanket cash disbursement programme for all senior citizens but a broader framework for delivering targeted welfare services.
The initiative has been widely described as a progressive step towards ensuring that elderly citizens receive the care, respect and support they deserve after years of contributing to the development of society.
Observers believe the legislation could serve as a model for other states seeking to strengthen social protection policies and improve the welfare of senior citizens across Nigeria.
