While Scrolling through Instagram, I saw a video that shattered my heart—a popular gospel musician sharing his encounter with a well-dressed man desperately searching through a dustbin for leftover food. As I watched, tears trickled down my cheeks, for this is our new reality.
According to Aminat Olabisi Ojodu, Hope Raisers Global Foundation, Consultant, Christmas With Hope 2024, in this interview with Weekenders magazine declared that “Mummy, when will we eat? Or what are we having ?” has become a chorus in many households across Nigeria. This question doesn’t stem from impatience as food cooks on the stove—it comes from hungry stomachs that have had only one meal in 24 hours, perhaps just a bowl of garri that barely quenched their hunger”.
As we prepare to celebrate and feast this Yuletide Season, we must remember the many families across the 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT, who can barely afford to feed. For them, “three square meals” is a phrase that belongs to the past. The big question remains “What are we doing collectively and individually to ensure that families around us Smile during the Yuletide season” ???
We can let Hope remain just a word for these families or make it a reality through “Christmas with Hope Project”, an initiative under the visionary leadership of Mrs. Angonimi David-Imeh, Executive Director of Hope Raisers Global Foundation. This initiative aims to provide food items for 1,850 households across Nigeria’s 36 states. Twenty NGOs are already working together to make this project successful, and more organizations are invited to join this noble cause.
This isn’t just a food drive; it’s a lifeline, a testament to our shared humanity.
An African philosophy says, “I am because we are.” It means that our humanity is intertwined—”when one suffers, we all suffer; when one thrives, we all rise”.
