Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Femi Fani-Kayode, has pledged to rebuild relations between Nigeria and South Africa, placing renewed diplomatic cooperation and the protection of Nigerians living in the country at the heart of his mission.
Fani-Kayode made the commitment on Sunday, October 25, 2026, shortly after arriving at O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to begin his diplomatic assignment.

The envoy, who is also concurrently accredited to the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Eswatini, said his priority was to restore the bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two African powers while advancing Nigeria’s national interests.
His arrival marks the beginning of a diplomatic mission expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic partnerships and addressing concerns affecting Nigerians in South Africa.
Speaking with journalists at the airport, Fani-Kayode stressed the importance of unity between Nigeria and South Africa, noting that both countries must work together to advance their shared interests and contribute to Africa’s development.

As two of the continent’s leading economies, he said, Nigeria and South Africa have a responsibility to deepen cooperation in pursuit of peace, economic prosperity, regional stability and African unity.
His mission comes amid concerns over tensions affecting relations between citizens of both countries, making constructive dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence critical priorities.
The High Commissioner is expected to engage relevant South African authorities on issues concerning the welfare and protection of Nigerians, while exploring avenues to strengthen diplomatic cooperation and improve relations between the two populations.
A strong advocate of Pan-Africanism, Fani-Kayode has consistently called for greater African solidarity, with nations working collectively to overcome shared challenges, protect the dignity of their citizens and promote the continent’s common interests.
Beyond diplomatic engagement, his assignment is expected to explore opportunities for stronger trade and investment ties, cultural exchanges and people-to-people cooperation, anchored on mutual respect, trust and shared prosperity.
Nigerian Community Welcomes Envoy
Fani-Kayode’s arrival was greeted by a large gathering of well-wishers and members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, who welcomed him with songs, cultural displays and expressions of excitement.
Among the dignitaries present were Ambassador Temitope Ajayi, former Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria; Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, Consul-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg; and Mr Puleng Chaba, Acting Director for West Africa at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
The reception drew representatives of Nigerian community associations, professional bodies, cultural groups, religious organisations, student unions and political groups operating in South Africa.
They included the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), Nigeria Doctors Forum, Nigerian Lawyers Association, Group of Nigerian Professionals Johannesburg and the National Association of Nigerian Students South Africa.
Also represented were the Congress of Nigerian Students at the University of Johannesburg, All Progressives Congress South Africa, City Boys South Africa, Egbe Omo Yoruba Association, Association of Yoruba in Diaspora South Africa and Yoruba Leaders Council.

The broad turnout highlighted the significance of the new diplomatic assignment to sections of the Nigerian community, whose interests and welfare remain central to the High Commission’s responsibilities.
As Fani-Kayode settles into his role, expectations will centre on translating his pledge of renewed friendship into practical diplomatic engagement, stronger economic ties and improved cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa.
His stated priority is clear: to rebuild trust, protect Nigerian interests and strengthen a partnership considered vital to Africa’s collective progress.
