In a significant step towards fostering economic self-reliance and reducing poverty in rural communities, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr., representing Cross River South Senatorial District, has disbursed ₦30 million in direct empowerment grants to constituents across the region.
The event, held in Calabar, brought together stakeholders, community leaders, and beneficiaries from the seven local government areas of the senatorial district, including Akpabuyo, Calabar South, Calabar Municipality, Bakassi, Odukpani, Akamkpa, and Biase.
A total of 300 carefully selected individuals comprising small business owners, women, farmers, artisans, and youths received financial grants of N100.00 each aimed at strengthening micro-enterprises, increasing local productivity, and improving living standards at the grassroots.
The grant distribution was managed by Iwari Global Service, an independent project consultancy firm contracted to conduct transparent verification and selection of beneficiaries to ensure fairness and credibility in the process.
Addressing attendees, Senator Ekpenyong reiterated his commitment to grassroots empowerment, describing the initiative as a core component of his legislative mission to promote economic inclusion and human capital development in line with the “People First” agenda of Governor Bassey Otu.
“This ₦30 million is more than a handout, it is a seed for hope and sustainable growth. Our people are resilient; all they need is a chance, and we are creating that opportunity,” he remarked.
The lawmaker, who was represented at the event by his Community Liaison Officer, Hon. Oqua Oqua, revealed that this disbursement marks the first phase of a broader empowerment agenda. Upcoming phases, he said, will incorporate skills acquisition programs, agricultural input support, and startup capital for youth-led ventures.
Grateful recipients of the grants praised the senator for what many described as a “rare, direct response to grassroots economic needs.”
Mrs. Ekaette Otu, a petty trader from Akpabuyo, expressed her appreciation, saying:
“With this support, I can grow my business and support my family. It feels good to finally be noticed by those in power.”
The initiative has drawn commendation from community-based organizations and political stakeholders alike, who applauded Senator Ekpenyong’s people-focused approach to representation.
Since assuming office, the senator has consistently championed developmental policies targeting youth empowerment, digital innovation, rural infrastructure, and small business support. His office has also sponsored scholarship schemes, health outreach programs, and entrepreneurship workshops.
The empowerment scheme, according to aides, is expected to be institutionalized into a revolving support fund, allowing qualified constituents continuous access to capital and training resources.
Observers say the move signals a refreshing shift toward impactful and accountable representation—one that centers the needs of everyday citizens in public service delivery.
