The GLOBAL IGBO FOUNDATION INITIATIVES (GIFI) expresses deep outrage and condemnation over the recent demolition of shops and buildings belonging to Igbo traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.
The demolitions, reportedly carried out under the supervision of Lagos State Government agencies, have rendered thousands of traders homeless, destroyed businesses, and caused severe economic hardship for families.
This action is unjust, insensitive, and inhumane, especially at a time when Nigerians are struggling with harsh economic realities. Some of the affected traders had fulfilled all their obligations to relevant authorities, including rent, levies, and taxes. Yet, without adequate notice or due consultation as alleged, bulldozers were unleashed on their shops, warehouses, and offices, leaving behind devastation and despair.
The President of Global Igbo Foundation Initiatives Amb. Dr Jonathan Lois finds this development unacceptable and calls on the Lagos State Government to immediately halt all further demolitions at the Trade Fair Complex and other parts of the state.
The Foundation also urges Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to set up a review committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the exercise and to ensure compensation for all affected traders.
The Foundation however, calls on its members in every part of the country to always go about their businesses in line with the provision of the laws of the land. ‘We must understand that law in every society is made for the good of all and must be obeyed at all times’.
We equally call on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and the Presidency to urgently wade into the matter to prevent further perceived injustices and to safeguard the constitutional rights of all Nigerians to live and do business freely in any part of the country.
The Global Igbo Foundation also appeals to the National Human Rights Commission, civil society organizations, and relevant stakeholders to investigate this matter and hold those responsible accountable.
The Igbo community in Lagos has, for decades, been a vital part of the state’s economy—creating jobs, paying taxes, and contributing immensely to its commercial and industrial growth. It is therefore disturbing that such a critical segment of the business community could be subjected to this level of disregard and economic violence.
The Global Igbo Foundation reiterates that its members are peace-loving, law-abiding citizens who believe in one Nigeria built on justice, equity, and fairness. However, acts of targeted demolition and economic displacement will only breed resentment and weaken national unity.
We stand firmly in solidarity with all affected traders and demand that justice be served without delay. The Forum will continue to engage relevant authorities through peaceful and lawful means until redress is achieved.
