Federal Ministry of Water Resources screens Niger state govt for sustainable Power and Irrigation

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation with the World Bank has screened Niger State Government for the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project. The screening was carried out by Aisha Ismail Njidda, an Environmental and Social Safeguards Specialist and Consultant for the SPIN project, on the 1st of July 2025, were chanchaga, Tagwai and Lapai Gwari is screened on environmental and social safeguard for a World Bank intervention in Niger State.

The screening is the critical step in advancing the proposed SPIN Irrigation Scheme project intervention in the State, aimed at enhancing sustainable agriculture and energy access in the state.

During the screening Njidda outlined the objectives of the Environmental and Social Screening exercise, as part of the role in ensuring compliance with international safeguards standards and mitigating potential risks to communities and ecosystems.

She noted that the SPIN project’s alignment with the State’s New Niger Agenda for agricultural transformation and climate-resilient infrastructure, as championed by Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration is sacrosanct.

In his response, the Permanent Secretary, Niger State Ministry of Water Resources and Dams Development, Akilu Musa Kuta, iterated that the State Government is ready to meet all the conditions outlined in the World Bank partnership template and development partners that prioritize sustainability and inclusive growth in Niger State. Stating that Niger State is open to collaborations that drive progress in line with the Farmer Governor’s agricultural transformation New Niger agenda noting that the SPIN project’s focuses on sustainability for a greener power and productive irrigation future of Niger State.

Meanwhile the permanent secretary Niger State ministry of water resources and dams development and the SPIN project team lead by it Consultant paid a courtesy visit to the SSG in his office ahead of the project Intervention in the state.
