In a ground event the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Correspondents’ Chapel ably led by Comrade Felix Ojo honoured Ebriku John Friday, Senior Special Assistant on Media Data Analytics to the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, with a Certificate of Commendation and Distinguished Leadership Award for Excellence in Journalism Advocacy.

The recognition was conferred during the Chapel’s 2025 End-of-Year Party, held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Abuja, and themed “Opportunities for Collective Bargaining and Unionisation: The Place of Welfare.”
Presenting the award, the Vice Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Hutson Efosa Akugbe, commended Ebriku for his consistent advocacy for journalists’ welfare, professionalism and capacity building, describing him as a dependable ally of the media.

According to Akugbe, “This award is in recognition of Mr Ebriku John Friday’s unwavering commitment to journalism advocacy, his support for media practitioners and his leadership qualities, which continue to positively impact the profession.”
The presentation was supported by the Chairman of the Welfare Committee, Comrade Princess Joy Idam, who is also a former Chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). She noted that the honour reflects Ebriku’s dedication to advancing the welfare and collective interests of journalists.

In his response, Ebriku John Friday expressed profound appreciation to the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel for the recognition, describing it as both humbling and motivating.
“I am deeply honoured by this award. It reinforces my belief in the critical role of journalism in nation-building and strengthens my resolve to continue advocating for the welfare, unity and professional growth of media practitioners,” he said.
The event brought together journalists from various media organisations, union leaders and stakeholders, and provided a platform for reflection on the importance of collective bargaining, unionisation and welfare in strengthening the journalism profession.
