The Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, Timothy Nwachi, has said that unity is the foundation of effective governance, especially in a culturally diverse community like Afikpo.
Speaking at the 2025 New Yam Festival in Unwana his home town, Nwachi explained that the event was designed to bring together his people and that the 11 autonomous communities of the area, each of which celebrates the festival on different dates.

He said uncooked yams were shared with communities yet to mark their own celebration, in line with tradition.
“In governance, unity is the key. The only way to lead well is to make everyone part of our actions. That is why no community was left out,” he stated.
Nwachi disclosed plans to harmonise the festival into a grand cultural carnival after all individual communities must have celebrated theirs, noting that the initiative would promote tourism and economic growth.

“With the ongoing development of Ndibe Beach (Uteki), Afikpo will soon become one of Ebonyi State’s leading tourist centres,” he said.
Also, the Commissioner for Market Development and Parks, Professor Ajuka Nwogo, commended the council boss, describing the festival as a tool for unity, reconciliation, and empowerment.
“Culture brings peace and strengthens communities. It is also a period of empowerment, reconciliation, and traditional marriage rites,” he noted.
The celebration, which featured cultural displays and empowerment of women, attracted dignitaries and visitors from within and outside the state.
