Kano witnessed a historic gathering of media stakeholders and journalists as American Media Consultants and Freedom Radio, in partnership with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), hosted a special event to celebrate Hajiya Mariya Galadanci, one of the first female broadcasters in Northern Nigeria and Kano State.

The event brought together broadcasters, journalists, civil society actors, and government representatives to honour Hajiya Galadanci’s pioneering contributions to broadcasting and her remarkable role in opening doors for women in the media industry.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour, NAWOJ National Secretary, Comrade Wasilah Ladan, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the National President of NAWOJ, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim. In her address, she commended Hajiya Galadanci for her courage, dedication, commitment, and sacrifices during her years of service at Radio Kano, noting that her trailblazing efforts paved the way for generations of women in media across Northern Nigeria.

According to her, “Hajiya Mariya did not just read the news; she broke cultural barriers. At a time when the microphone was considered a man’s space, she stepped forward and demonstrated that women’s voices are vital in shaping public discourse and national development.”

Comrade Wasilah Ladan stressed that the best way to honour pioneers like Hajiya Mariya is to create more opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making positions.

“Media has given women a voice; politics must now give women a seat at the table. We call on governments at all levels to move beyond promises and fully implement the 35% affirmative action for women in politics and governance,” she stated.

In her message, NAWOJ National President, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of celebrating women who have made significant contributions to society while they are still alive. She noted that the programme provided an opportunity to honour Hajiya Galadanci and present her with a token of appreciation from American Media Consultants in recognition of her outstanding service to journalism and women empowerment.

Responding to the honour, Hajiya Mariya Galadanci expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organizers and encouraged young women journalists to remain professional, resilient, and courageous in the discharge of their duties.

The organizers… Freedom Radio, American Media Consultants, and NAWOJ, were widely commended for initiating the celebration and for spotlighting the invaluable contributions of women to media development in Northern Nigeria.

Comrade Wasilah Ladan also appreciated Freedom Radio and American Media Consultants for recognizing and honouring a media icon whose contributions continue to inspire younger generations.

“Celebrating our sheroes while they are alive is one of the highest forms of appreciation and respect. Their stories serve as inspiration and a reminder of what determination and excellence can achieve,” she added.

The event concluded with tributes, reflections, and a renewed commitment by women journalists to uphold professionalism, promote excellence, and mentor the next generation of media practitioners.

This was contained in a state signed by the National Secretary, Comrade, Wasilah Ladan.
