NAWOJ FCT Hails National Body, NUJ President, NEC, Raises Concerns Over Insecurity, Drug Abuse

On the State of the Association and Union, The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter has commended the National Chairperson Comrade Aisha Ibrahim-led National Executive for successfully securing and paying for land allocated during President Ladi Bala’s era, marking the continuation of a long-cherished dream to construct a National Secretariat a reality.

The association equally called on members and stakeholders to rally support for the construction of a befitting structure, heralding this milestone as a significant step towards establishing a permanent national presence.

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, and NEC were commended for promoting inclusiveness by ensuring female journalists actively engaged in the affairs of the Union, following the appointment of three and election of one during the just concluded Kano NEC meeting.

The Executive Committee of NAWOJ FCT was also commended for the judicious use of limited resources to promote the welfare, growth, and professional development of members.

On the State of the Nation, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter, expressed deep concern over the rising cases of insecurity and drug abuse in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. In a communique issued after its meeting on August 16, 2025, the association called on relevant authorities to take concrete steps to address these issues.

The communique highlighted several key resolutions, including:

-Insecurity in FCT : NAWOJ condemned the rising incidents of “one chance,” kidnapping, 419 scams, and other criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory and called on the FCT Administration to strengthen collaboration with security agencies.

  • Drug Abuse : NAWOJ expressed concern over the increasing cases of drug abuse among youths and called on relevant authorities to intensify awareness campaigns and enforcement.
  • Security Awareness : The association urged women to be more security-conscious and avoid late-night movements, while also calling on government and security agencies to strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

NAWOJ also urged religious institutions to intensify moral teachings and incorporate values that condemn unwholesome acts, particularly those driven by greed.

The Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting the welfare of members, amplifying the voices of women, and upholding the rights of children.

The communique serves as a call to action for relevant authorities, security agencies, and stakeholders to work together to address the pressing issues of insecurity and drug abuse in the country.
