The Niger State Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation Services has expressed its readiness to partner with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Niger State Chapter, to strengthen public awareness on water, sanitation and hygiene across the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Irrigation Services, Engr. Farouk Umaru Audi, made this known when he received the executive members of NAWOJ, led by the State Chairperson, Dr. Asabe Suleiman on a courtesy visit to his office at the State Secretariat, Minna.
Engr. Audi described the media as a critical stakeholder in the dissemination of government policies and programmes, stressing that collaboration with professional media organisations such as NAWOJ would enhance effective communication and public participation in the Ministry’s activities.
He said the Ministry would work closely with the Association to ensure the timely and accurate dissemination of information on water resources management, irrigation services, sanitation and hygiene, adding that the partnership would help educate residents on the importance of safe water practices and environmental sanitation.
According to the Commissioner, sustained public enlightenment is essential to achieving the Ministry’s mandate of providing sustainable water services and improving the quality of life of the people of Niger State.
Earlier, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr. Asabe Sule Garba, said the Association was committed to supporting government initiatives through strategic media engagement and public education. She noted that NAWOJ’s focus on women, children and community development places it in a unique position to complement the Ministry’s efforts in promoting safe drinking water, proper sanitation and improved hygiene practices.
Dr. Garba called for a stronger partnership between the Ministry and the Association, assuring the Commissioner of NAWOJ’s readiness to mobilise its members to amplify government programmes and sensitise communities on issues relating to water, sanitation and public health.
The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism that the collaboration would deepen public awareness, encourage behavioural change and support the state’s drive toward improved access to sustainable water services.
