The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Mr. Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).
In a statement signed by Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, President of the NUJ, the Union described Oladipo’s passing as a great loss to the Nigerian media industry and the nation.
It said his death came at a time when journalism continues to demand courage, professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to democratic values.
The Union noted that Oladipo was an experienced and intellectually grounded journalist who devoted several decades to the profession. According to the NUJ, he stood out for his commitment to credible journalism, public accountability and the growth of the media industry.
As publisher of The Eagle Online, Oladipo played an important role in the rise of digital journalism in Nigeria.
The NUJ said he understood the changing media landscape and contributed significantly to the strengthening of online journalism as a tool for public enlightenment and accountability.
His leadership of GOCOP also reflected his dedication to the professionalisation of online publishing and the promotion of responsible journalism.
The Union said he believed strongly in the media’s role in Nigeria’s democratic development.
The NUJ described his death as a major setback to the journalism profession.
It also said that beyond his professional achievements, Oladipo was a colleague, mentor, advocate and friend to many in the media community, adding that his influence would remain evident for years to come.
On behalf of the National Executive Council of the NUJ and the Nigerian journalism community, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi extended condolences to his immediate family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, members of GOCOP, his professional associates, friends and colleagues.
The NUJ urged the family to find comfort in the legacy he left behind and the many lives he touched through his journalism and leadership.
It concluded that though his voice has been silenced, his contributions to Nigerian journalism will continue to speak for him.
