Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding their long-standing strategic partnership, with renewed focus on trade, investment, energy, migration, technology and regional security, following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s new Ambassador to Germany, Ambassador Ita Solomon Enang, OFR.
Ambassador Enang officially assumed his diplomatic responsibilities after presenting his credentials to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Berlin. He was accompanied by his wife, Deputy Head of Mission Mohammed Bashir Basha, and Head of Chancery Dr. Chioma Aisha Okorie-Haidara.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Enang held high-level talks with President Steinmeier, where both leaders reaffirmed the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Germany and pledged to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
A major focus of the discussions was strengthening economic and commercial relations through increased investment, enhanced trade and industrial collaboration. The two countries also explored opportunities to accelerate cooperation in the energy sector, particularly through the Siemens Power Initiative, off-grid electricity solutions and projects that will convert Nigeria’s flared gas into electricity.
Migration also featured prominently during the meeting, with both sides discussing a proposed Nigeria-Germany Migration Agreement aimed at creating legal pathways for skilled Nigerian professionals in sectors such as healthcare, engineering, information technology, artificial intelligence and other critical industries where Germany faces labour shortages.
The bilateral talks equally highlighted prospects for greater German investment in Nigeria’s automobile assembly industry, technology transfer and broader industrial development, reflecting both countries’ desire to deepen economic partnerships that create jobs and drive sustainable growth.
Regional peace and security issues were also on the agenda, with discussions acknowledging Nigeria’s leadership role within ECOWAS and the importance of renewed engagement with countries in the Sahel to promote stability across West Africa.
The two leaders further reviewed Germany’s continued support for the implementation of the Green Tree Agreement following the International Court of Justice ruling on the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary dispute, including humanitarian concerns affecting communities in the Bakassi Peninsula.
Ambassador Enang conveyed the appreciation of the Federal Government of Nigeria for Germany’s humanitarian assistance recently announced during the visit of German Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to Nigeria, where he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the presentation of credentials as another significant milestone in Nigeria-Germany relations, expressing confidence that the renewed diplomatic engagement would further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, migration, regional security and sustainable development for the mutual benefit of both nations.
