Ahead of the 2024 World Elder Abuse Day, the Nigeria Senior Citizens Center met with the Leadership of Journalists Network for Ageng in Nigeria (JONAN) to discuss activities that will boost sensitization on ageism.

Mr Omini Oden, Head Corporate Affairs, Media and Communication NSCC, who represented the Director General Dr Emem Omokaro at the meeting stressed the need for JONAN to intensify efforts on sensitization, repositioning itself and advocacy as awareness on ageism is still very low in Nigeria.

He noted that the NSCC has made a landmark in the welfare of the aged in Nigeria with the recent launch of Geriatric Social Care Sector and Centers and is working with the relevant agencies to ensure that the Rights of Older Persons is upheld at all times.

Responding on behalf of the Journalists Network for Ageing in Nigeria, Princess Joy Udam, the Vice-Chairperson commended the NSCC for the progress made so far towards mainstreaming Older Persons issues in Nigeria.

She assured the NSCC that JONAN is fully prepared to discharge her watchdog and agenda setting responsibilities in the interest of Older Persons in Nigeria.

According to Princess Idam, the Dr.Omokaro led leadership of the NSCC had set a standard in issues of Older Persons in Nigeria and have in their short time of existence brought about a radical changed outlook on Ageing in Nigeria.
