The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Chapel, has commenced activities for its 2026 Press Week with a two-day capacity-building training for information officers and a public sensitisation campaign on tax compliance and good governance.
The training, themed “Responsible Use of AI & ICT to Enhance Modern Journalism Practice,” brought together information officers, journalists, administrators, human resource personnel and communication professionals from Secretariates, Departments and Agencies (SDAs) of the FCT Administration to strengthen their knowledge of emerging technologies in journalism and public communication.
In her welcome address, the Chairman of the NUJ FCTA Chapel, Comrade Ngozi Ufomba Uloma, commended the Chairman NUJ FCT Council Comrade Grace Ike for the mentorship, she thanked guests, resource persons and members of the Chapel for taking time to attend the programme. She described the training as a timely initiative designed to equip information officers and media professionals with the skills required to navigate the rapidly evolving digital media environment.
Comrade Uloma said Artificial Intelligence and Information and Communication Technology have become indispensable tools for news gathering, fact-checking, content creation and audience engagement. She urged participants to embrace the technologies responsibly while upholding the core values of journalism, including truth, accuracy, professionalism and ethical reporting.
She also appreciated the Director of Information and Communication, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, the Managing Director of Abuja Enterprise Agency, Chief Chudi Enekwechi, resource persons, partners and participants for supporting the capacity-building programme, expressing confidence that the training would enhance the capacity of information officers to deliver quality public information services. Ufomba was full of praises for the members of the Press Week Committee who worked tiredlessly to pull off the event.
Declaring the training open, the Director of Information and Communication, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, described Artificial Intelligence as an indispensable tool for modern journalism when applied responsibly.
He noted that AI now plays a significant role in newsroom operations by assisting journalists with research, editing, grammar enhancement and content development, while stressing that the technology should complement—not replace—original thinking, ethical judgment and professional responsibility.
Mr. Ogunleye commended the NUJ FCTA Chapel for organising the training, describing it as timely and necessary in preparing media professionals for the realities of digital journalism. He also expressed the commitment of the Department of Information and Communication to organise similar training for all information officers across the Department when approvals and funding are secured.
As part of the 2026 Press Week activities, the Chapel also embarked on a sensitisation campaign on tax compliance and good governance across the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during the exercise, Comrade Uloma said the campaign was aimed at educating residents on the importance of voluntary tax compliance as a catalyst for sustainable development.
She explained that the 2026 Press Week theme, “Tax Compliance and Good Governance,” underscores the relationship between responsible citizenship and accountable governance, noting that taxes remain the foundation for infrastructure development and effective public service delivery.
She urged residents, business owners and other stakeholders to fulfil their civic responsibility by paying taxes promptly while demanding transparency and accountability from government.
Comrade Uloma commended the FCT Administration under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, for ongoing infrastructural projects across the Territory, including road construction, rehabilitation of schools and hospitals, urban renewal and other development initiatives.
During the sensitisation exercise, members of the Chapel visited several Secretariats, Departments and Agencies, including the Education Secretariat, Arts and Culture Secretariat, Sports Department, Women Affairs Secretariat, Abuja Enterprise Agency, Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS), FCT Water Board and RUWASSA, where they distributed information materials and encouraged staff and members of the public to support the campaign with the message, “Pay Your Tax for Good Governance.”
The 2026 NUJ FCTA Press Week will culminate on Thursday, July 30, with an awards ceremony to honour distinguished individuals and organisations for their contributions to the development of the Federal Capital Territory, the advancement of journalism and the promotion of good governance.
