Ogun State’s Future in Your Hands : Key Stakeholders Push for Electoral Reform

Political Opinion Article

Earlier this week, a landmark webinar titled “My Vote is My Future: The Power of One Vote” brought together key stakeholders and political figures to emphasize the crucial role of individual votes in shaping Ogun State’s future. The virtual meeting, aims at promoting political awareness and voter participation, featured prominent speakers including Comrade Ayobami Faloye, Convener of Youthquake Hub Nigeria, and Adeagbo Rilwan Ademilekan, LG Coordinator of LMPO.

Comrade Adesegun Bamodu, LP Chairmanship Aspirant for Remo North, highlighted the pervasive electoral malpractices, particularly the undue influence of state governors on the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIEC). “Governors have too much influence on the outcome of local elections,” Bamodu stated, stressing the need for a level playing field and vigilant voters.

According to Bamodu, the historical tendency for the ruling party to dominate at the local level must be challenged, and voters must remain vigilant to prevent manipulation. “Our agents are informed, and we are determined to monitor the process to prevent manipulation,” he added.

Comrade Dacosta emphasizes the importance of focusing on local issues, stating that community development should be the priority for a ballot revolution at the grassroots level. He advocate for political parties to select candidates reflecting community interests rather than serving party elites.

Comrade Faloye calls for leveraging technology to enhance electoral processes, ensuring the trustworthiness of systems like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Participants urged a review of the State Electoral Commission to ensure independence and transparency, and the use of artificial intelligence to improve voter registration.

The role of civil society organizations and youth movements was also highlighted, with speakers encouraging youths and advocacy groups to demand transparency and community-driven governance, holding local officials accountable. “Youth are crucial in holding elected officials accountable, especially at the local level,” Dacosta noted.

The webinar concluded with a resounding message: every vote holds the power to shape Ogun State’s future. Residents were urged to resist monetary inducements, exercise their right responsibly, and hold elected officials accountable. By doing so, Ogun State can move towards true democracy and community development. As Faloye emphasizes, “Do not sell your vote; do not accept material gifts in exchange for your future.”
