Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, has flagged off the construction of a critical 10-kilometre road linking Ndok Junction to Mbube and Okubushuyi communities in Ogoja Local Government Area, marking another milestone in his administration’s rural development drive.

The flag-off ceremony, which took place over the weekend, was performed on behalf of the governor by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey. Speaking at the event, Odey described the project as a key component of the administration’s broader agenda to enhance rural accessibility, improve livelihoods, and stimulate economic activity through strategic road infrastructure.

“This project is aimed at opening up our rural communities and improving the transportation network to boost commerce and enhance the quality of life for our people,” the deputy governor said. He further noted that the current phase will be extended in the near future from Mbube East to Utugwang in Obudu Local Government Area.

Otu urged the contractor to adhere strictly to international construction standards and emphasized the importance of local content in project execution. He specifically advocated for the employment of local youth as part of the workforce, citing the move as a catalyst for job creation, skills development, and grassroots empowerment.

“We want to see local participation—not just to accelerate work, but also to foster a sense of ownership among community members and improve their economic well-being,” he added.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Pius Ankpo, acknowledged the state’s fiscal constraints and explained that adopting a phased approach to the project ensures prudent use of available resources. He also pledged rigorous supervision by the ministry to guarantee compliance with design specifications and timely delivery.

Ankpo further disclosed that over 12 kilometres of road rehabilitation are currently underway in Ogoja metropolis, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to inter-community connectivity and rural upliftment.

Traditional rulers and local leaders present at the event hailed the governor’s initiative, describing it as a sign of responsive and visionary leadership. They pledged their unflinching support and offered prayers for the continued success of the current administration.

The Ndok Junction–Mbube–Okubushuyi road, once completed, is expected to serve as a vital link for commerce, agriculture, and social integration in the northern part of the state.
