The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has expressed profound gratitude to the organisers of the 8th Silent Heroes Awards Abuja 2026 for honouring her with the Silent Hero in Management Award, describing the recognition as a tribute to the resilience, dedication and professionalism of journalists.

Speaking while receiving the award, Comrade Ike said the honour was both humbling and inspiring, noting that it would further motivate her to continue serving the journalism profession and society with integrity and commitment.

“I receive this Silent Hero in Management Award with profound gratitude, deep humility and a strong sense of responsibility.

“I sincerely thank the organisers of the Silent Heroes Awards for finding me worthy of this recognition. I consider this honour not merely as a personal achievement, but as a tribute to every journalist, media professional and union member who works tirelessly behind the scenes to strengthen our profession and advance the ideals of responsible journalism.”

The NUJ FCT Chairman said leadership is built on teamwork, sacrifice and service, stressing that the achievements recorded by the Council have been made possible through the collective efforts of members, executive officers, chapel leaders, veterans of the profession and strategic partners.

She noted that the award would serve as renewed motivation to work harder for the welfare of journalists and the advancement of ethical journalism.

“As journalists, we remain custodians of truth, defenders of democracy and advocates for accountability. At a time when misinformation, insecurity and other social challenges continue to test our society, our profession must remain guided by ethics, professionalism, fairness and public interest.”

Comrade Ike reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening the welfare of journalists, promoting capacity building, encouraging ethical journalism, fostering unity within the NUJ and creating opportunities that will improve the professional and economic well-being of members.

She dedicated the award to journalists across Nigeria who continue to serve with courage and professionalism despite numerous challenges, while also acknowledging the support of her family, mentors, colleagues and all those who have contributed to her leadership journey.

“This recognition is not the end of the journey; rather, it is renewed motivation to contribute even more to journalism, nation-building and humanity.”

Comrade Ike also commended the organisers of the Silent Heroes Awards for recognising individuals whose contributions often go unnoticed, describing the initiative as a worthy platform that celebrates selfless service and impactful leadership.
