Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have called on the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) to formally recognise October 22 of every year as the Global Day of the Advocate, in recognition of the contributions of individuals and groups championing positive social change across the world.

The call was made by the initiators of the Day of the Advocate, Messrs Kalejaiye Olasunkanmi and Daniel Atori, while addressing journalists in Minna, Niger State, following the third commemoration of the initiative. They expressed concern that despite the significant roles advocates play in promoting social development, human rights and community advancement, their efforts often receive inadequate recognition and support.

The Day of the Advocate was commemorated for the third time on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Minna, through the joint initiative of some CSOs seeking to celebrate individuals and organisations whose advocacy efforts contribute to making society better.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Executive Director of Global Promoters for Community Initiative (GPCI), Mr Kalejaiye Olasunkanmi, said recognising advocates was essential to building inclusive, accountable and sustainable communities.

He noted that advocates were often at the forefront of meaningful social change through raising awareness, mobilising communities, influencing policies, promoting accountability and speaking up for vulnerable and underserved populations.

According to him, the Day of the Advocate is designed to appreciate their commitment, inspire emerging advocates, strengthen partnerships and promote a culture of recognition for individuals working to improve society.

Mr Kalejaiye added that formal recognition by the UN and AU would provide a global platform to celebrate advocates, showcase successful initiatives and encourage increased support for individuals and organisations championing positive social transformation.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Niger State (COCSIN), Mr Daniel Atori, said the initiative was aimed at securing international recognition for people using their voices, skills and resources to drive positive change.

“Our message is simple: celebrate the advocates, recognise their initiatives, support the cause and sustain the changes,” he said.

Mr Atori explained that the call was for the UN and AU to set aside October 22 as a special day to celebrate advocates whose contributions continue to make a difference in communities and societies across the world.

He further appealed to development partners to support the campaign and amplify efforts towards securing international recognition for advocates, particularly those working in critical areas such as human rights, healthcare, education, child protection, gender equality, social protection and environmental sustainability.

He maintained that recognising and supporting advocates would encourage sustained commitment to social development and strengthen collective efforts towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.
