Allegations of Military Crackdown and Humanitarian Crisis Rock Amasiri Community
By Our Reporter
AMASIRI, EBONYI STATE — Tensions have escalated in Amasiri community, Ebonyi State, as residents level serious allegations against the Ebonyi State Government, accusing it of orchestrating a sustained military operation that has led to widespread displacement, economic paralysis, and an unfolding humanitarian crisis.

In a strongly worded statement addressed to Nigerians and the international community, members of the community alleged that Francis Ogbonna Erishi Nwifuru has misrepresented the situation in Amasiri, claiming that recent government assertions regarding the discovery of human remains are part of a deliberate media strategy to portray the community as violent and lawless.
According to the statement, residents dispute the credibility of the claims, questioning how conclusions were drawn about decomposing remains without what they describe as proper forensic verification. Community leaders have characterized the allegations as propaganda aimed at justifying what they call “brutal treatment” and a broader campaign of suppression.

Alleged Deception Surrounding Peace Efforts
Community representatives further allege that a peace initiative involving traditional elders was manipulated. They claim that government agents approached revered community leaders with promises of reconciliation, leading to the performance of a sacred peace ceremony symbolized by the sharing of yellowish-green palm fronds, traditionally signifying the end of hostilities and the beginning of renewed harmony.
Residents say security personnel were present during the ceremony and pledged peace. However, they allege that shortly after the event concluded, military operations intensified, including reported house-to-house searches, arrests, and shootings. The statement claims that even elderly residents have not been spared.
Humanitarian Concerns Mount
The community outlines what it describes as an escalating humanitarian emergency. According to residents:
Schools have been shut down, preventing children from attending classes.
Farmers are reportedly unable to access their farmlands.
Markets are inaccessible, disrupting trade and livelihoods.
Both public and private healthcare facilities are said to be closed.
Individuals allegedly injured during security operations are reportedly unable to access medical care.
Elderly and sick residents are said to be dying without treatment.
These claims have not yet been independently verified, and there has been no official response addressing the specific humanitarian allegations at the time of this report.
Quarry Operations Continue Amid Crisis
Residents also question why quarry companies operating in the area have reportedly continued activities uninterrupted despite the broader security lockdown. They allege that while community members have been displaced, extractive operations generating revenue for the state remain active.
Critics within the community describe the situation as exploitation under the guise of security enforcement. They argue that natural resources belonging to the host community are being extracted while locals bear the brunt of military action.
Call for National and International Attention
The community is calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria, international human rights organizations, and global observers to investigate the situation and ensure accountability. They insist they are seeking justice rather than sympathy and urge authorities and the global community not to ignore their plight.
As of press time, the Ebonyi State Government has not issued a detailed response to the allegations contained in the community’s statement. The situation remains tense, with residents appealing for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation.
