Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, His Excellency Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ideals of freedom, unity, progress and dignity as the nation marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Dr. Ikpeazu stated this in Madrid at a colourful event commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration, where he welcomed diplomats, members of the Nigerian community in Spain, Spanish partners and friends of Nigeria.
In his anniversary speech, the Ambassador said it was a profound honour and privilege to host the celebration of Nigeria’s historic independence.
“As you are aware, on this day in 1960, our great nation proudly raised its green-white-green flag and took its rightful place among the free and sovereign nations of the world,” he said.
“Today, we gather here in Madrid, Spain, not only to commemorate that historic milestone, but also to reaffirm our enduring commitment to the ideals of freedom, unity, progress, and dignity that continue to guide our national journey,” Ambassador Ikpeazu declared.
The Envoy congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and all Nigerians, especially those residing in the Kingdom of Spain, on the 66th Independence Anniversary.
He paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and nationalists whose courage and sacrifice secured freedom for the country, noting that their legacy remains a reminder that nation-building is a continuous endeavour that demands resilience, innovation and collective responsibility.
According to the Ambassador, Nigeria today stands tall as Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, rich in human talent, cultural diversity and natural resources.
“We remain proud of our democratic institutions, our vibrant youth population, and our contributions to regional peace, security, and development on the African continent and beyond,” he noted.
Ambassador Ikpeazu also used the occasion to reflect on the strong and growing friendship between Nigeria and the Kingdom of Spain, describing bilateral relations as one characterized by mutual respect, constructive dialogue and expanding cooperation.
He listed trade, investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges as key areas where both nations have made remarkable progress.
He commended Spanish companies like GB Foods and others that continue to find opportunities in Nigeria’s dynamic market, while acknowledging the contributions of Nigerians in Spain to the social and economic fabric of their host country.
“We deeply value Spain’s partnership and look forward to deepening collaboration in areas of shared interest, including renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and the creative industries,” the Ambassador stated.
In a special message to the Nigerian community in Spain, comprising students, professionals and entrepreneurs, Dr. Ikpeazu described them as Nigeria’s most valuable ambassadors.
“You remain our most valuable ambassadors. Your hard work, integrity, and achievements enhance the image of our nation and strengthen the bridges between our two countries,” he said.
He urged them to remain united, law-abiding and proud carriers of the Nigerian spirit of enterprise, innovation and resilience as they celebrate the nation’s independence.
Speaking on the future, the Ambassador said Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to pursue bold reforms aimed at economic diversification, improved governance and inclusive growth.
“We are not satisfied with the present economic realities, but we are making progress as a people. Government is determined to harness the energy of our youth, the creativity of our people, and the strength of our diversity to build a more prosperous and secure future,” he assured.
Dr. Ikpeazu further affirmed that Nigeria will continue to create opportunities for investment and business-to-business matchmaking to drive national development, adding that the support and friendship of partners like Spain remains invaluable.
“I want to categorically affirm that we will continue to create opportunities for investment and business-to-business matchmaking to develop our country,” he emphasized.
He concluded with a toast to both nations.
“Fellow Nigerians, as we raise a toast to Nigeria at 66, let us renew our pledge to work together for a nation that is peaceful, prosperous, and respected in the comity of nations. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Long live the Kingdom of Spain!”
WEEKENDERS MAGAZINE reports that the event in Madrid brought together members of the diplomatic corps, Spanish government officials, business leaders and Nigerians in the diaspora in a celebration of Nigeria’s rich heritage and its enduring friendship with Spain.
