In a major boost for women in journalism, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Aliyu Mukhtar Betara, OON, has pledged to personally construct a befitting National Secretariat for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Abuja.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by NAWOJ leadership, led by its National Chairperson, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim, as the association continues to push for the development of its newly acquired land in Lugbe, Abuja.
Betara’s promise signals a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity for women journalists in Nigeria, particularly at a time when media inclusion and representation remain central to national discourse.
“I will personally ensure that NAWOJ has a befitting National Secretariat,” Betara said, reaffirming his commitment to delivering the project.

NAWOJ recently secured a Certificate of Occupancy for land designated for its national headquarters in Lugbe, a development seen as a milestone for the association. However, like many large-scale projects, execution has remained a challenge.
Betara’s intervention could accelerate progress.

The lawmaker also revealed plans to engage the Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, to secure the necessary government backing.
“I will talk to the Minister so that he gives the necessary support and we can move this forward,” he added.
He further advised NAWOJ leadership to ensure all documentation is properly in place to enable faster approvals and smooth implementation.
Betara Endorses WINSEC 2026
Beyond infrastructure, the lawmaker threw his weight behind the upcoming Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026 — a NAWOJ initiative in collaboration with AIT.

The event aims to recognise courage, dedication, and sacrifice among security personnel, with a particular focus on highlighting the contributions of women.
Betara described the initiative as “timely and impactful,” underscoring the need to celebrate excellence within Nigeria’s security sector.
Recognition and Collaboration
During the visit, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim, formally notified Betara of his nomination for an award. She cited his contributions to constituency development, as well as his efforts in empowering women and youths.
The lawmaker expressed appreciation for the recognition and reaffirmed his willingness to support the association.
The engagement highlights growing collaboration between policymakers and media institutions in advancing national development. For NAWOJ, the proposed secretariat represents more than a physical structure — it is a symbol of progress, visibility, and institutional strength for women in journalism.
As the association continues to advocate for gender inclusion and professional excellence, the promised edifice in Abuja could mark a turning point in its history.
The development was contained in a statement signed by NAWOJ National Secretary, Comrade Wasilah Ladan.
