The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man, Justice Ozobi, and his accomplice over alleged false claims against the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command.
The suspects were accused of alleging that the Commissioner collected ₦700,000 each from six families for the release of their sons.
The command, in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said it had earlier dismissed the allegations as false and misleading.
According to the police, Ozobi also used the photograph of a former Commissioner of Police in his post, subjecting the retired senior officer to what it described as unwarranted public ridicule and embarrassment.
The command said Ozobi was arrested in Anambra State and had since been brought to Ebonyi for investigation.
It said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The police said while citizens have the right to express their views, raise genuine concerns and make constructive observations on policing, it would not tolerate the deliberate dissemination of false, malicious or defamatory information.
Such information, it said, could tarnish the image of the command and the Nigeria Police Force, impugn the integrity of its officers and undermine public confidence in police personnel.
The command reiterated its commitment to accountability, saying it would continue to hold its officers to the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and ethical conduct.
It urged members of the public to verify information before disseminating it and channel genuine complaints through appropriate authorities for prompt and impartial investigation.
