World Press Freedom Day reminds us to protect and support the media. It helps people understand why it’s important for journalists to speak freely and stay safe.
The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2025 is “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
This theme highlights how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reshaping journalism, media operations, and press freedom. It focuses on both the opportunities and risks posed by AI, from the automation of reporting to the spread of misinformation, biases in AI algorithms, and threats to the safety and independence of journalism.
The theme underlines the urgent need to ensure that technology serves public interest journalism and does not undermine freedom of expression and democratic participation.
This is a day to remind government at all levels respect press freedom and to reflect among media professionals on issues related to press ethics and independence.
It highlights the importance of a free, independent, and pluralistic media in strengthening democracy and good governance.
The day honors journalists who risk their lives to bring truth to the public while creating awareness about the obstacles journalists face, including censorship, harassment, legal threats, and violence.
