The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, held its monthly congress on March 15th, 2025, at the NUJ FCT Secretariat, Utako, Abuja. The meeting, presided over by Chairperson Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, brought together members to discuss and deliberate on key national issues.
Key Resolutions and Deliberations:
Protection of the Girl Child : The Congress emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of the girl child, encouraging members to advocate for initiatives that empower young girls to speak up against harassment and abuse.

Economic Reforms and Cost of Living : Despite acknowledging the Federal Government’s economic reforms, members lamented the high cost of living and urged the government to regulate commodity prices and alleviate the economic burden on citizens.
Electricity and Data Tariffs : The Women Journalists condemned the recent hike in electricity unit and data subscription rates, calling on authorities to review and implement fair pricing mechanisms.
Regulation of Sachet Alcoholic Drinks : Members called for stringent regulations to curb the indiscriminate sale and consumption of sachet alcoholic drinks, highlighting their detrimental impact on society.
-Affordable Housing for Journalists : The Congress deliberated on the challenges posed by increasing house rents and considered plans to engage with stakeholders to explore affordable housing options for journalists.
“2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) Programme*: NAWOJians were encouraged to participate in the upcoming IWD celebration, themed “Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women.”
Recognition and Celebration : The Congress concluded with a celebration of members born in March and commended members for their support and solidarity towards the former NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Stella Okononese. Congress gave Comrade Joy Omagha Idam, former Chairperson NAWOJ FCT a standing ovation for her role in Care Giving the former Chairperson back to health while at the hospital.
The Congress reaffirmed NAWOJ’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights, social justice, and policies that promote the welfare of journalists and the general public.
