Communiqué Issued at the End of NUJ FCT’s September 2024, Congress

Resolutions and Recommendations:

  1. Congress expressed concern on the harsh economic strain being experienced by Nigerians. Congress called for urgent sustainable government action to cushion the effect.
  2. Congress unequivocally frowned at the recent Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) price hike, noting that it has stretched household budgets to the breaking point leading to escalation of essential commodities which have gone beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians and called on the government to expedite action in reversing the situation.
  3. Congress expressed deep concern on the rise of tuition fees in schools as many parents are now unable to keep their children in and seek for affordable alternatives. Congress warns that failure to take concrete action will lead to a growing number of out-of-school children.
  4. Congress also tasked security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police, to quickly put measures in place towards combating the scourge of insecurity, particularly the notorious ‘one-chance’ crimes which is on the increase in the territory, strengthen the security architecture of the nation for effective and efficient protection of lives and property.
  5. The congress noted that annual flooding in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has wreaked havoc—claiming lives, destroying property worth billions of naira, and leaving countless residents homeless and called on the government to alleviate the suffering of victims and put up measures to avert future occurrence.
