The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially launched a device that will issue instant electronic ticketing to traffic offenders in the territory.
The Director, Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Dr Abdullateef Bello who made this known during sensitization operation on the new enforcement strategy, said the e-Ticketing system is legally backed under the FCT Transportation Secretariat’s existing laws.
The DRTS Boss explained that the high-tech device is capable of detecting and recording traffic infractions, thereby reducing physical confrontations between officers and motorists.
He said any offender issued e-Ticketing has only 7days ultimatum to pay up the fine, as failure to comply will leave the DRTS with no choice, but to impound such vehicles.
Dr Bello, seems to be challenging the court ruling barring it from stopping and impounding vehicles, when he pointed out that impoundment remained one of the penalties stipulated for those that failed to pay their fines within the 7day window of grace.
He assured that with the e-Ticketing strategy, the FCTA aims to enhance road safety, reduce corruption, and streamline traffic management in the capital city.
“In compliance with the FCT Transportation Secretariat’s strategy on e-enforcement, we have today, Monday, February 17, 2025, commenced e-ticketing and central booking of traffic offenders.
“Moving forward, all traffic violators will be electronically booked and given a seven-day grace period to pay their fines. Failure to comply will result in vehicle impoundment.
“We are back on the road and we will now be impounding vehicles only when you fail to pay your fines within seven days. The DRTS will not be stopping vehicles at random now because the devices will select those that are not adequately in line with the position of law, and those are the ones we will be dealing with henceforth”.Bello said.
