NAWOJ FCT Charges Women to Prioritize Cancer Screening as Congress Highlights Security and Welfare Concerns

By Gloria Tochukwu Umeweni

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has issued a strong call to action for women across Nigeria to take advantage of free cancer screening opportunities. This appeal was made during the NAWOJ FCT June 2025 Congress, which featured discussions on the health, safety, and socio-political inclusion of Nigerian women.

Cancer Screening: A Matter of Life and Death
Dr. Tessy Ahmadu, a Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist from FMC Jabi, emphasized that “cancer is not a death sentence” but stressed the importance of early detection. She urged NAWOJ members to help demystify myths around screening and encourage women to take charge of their health. Over 100 NAWOJ FCT members benefited from a free Thermalytix-based screening exercise during the Congress.

State of the Nation: NAWOJ FCT Demands Action
The Congress commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring distinguished Nigerians during the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations but expressed disappointment at the gross underrepresentation of women. The association also condemned the worsening state of insecurity, high cost of living, and epileptic power supply across Nigeria.

Security Concerns: NAWOJ FCT Condemns Armed Robbery Attack
The Congress strongly condemned the recent armed robbery attack on NAWOJ FCT Vice Chairperson Comrade Bolanle Ukpevo and demanded urgent action from the government to address the rising tide of violence.

NAWOJ FCT Internal Affairs and Welfare Matters
The Congress also discussed internal affairs and welfare matters, including:

  • Membership mobilization and participation
  • Condolence protocols for bereaved members
  • Welfare packages for senior citizens
  • Blood donation drive in honor of World Blood Donor Day

The Congress ended with a call for unity, innovation, and action, with Chairperson Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang inviting members to contribute ideas on how to steer NAWOJ FCT to greater heights. The association is committed to building a stronger, safer, and more inclusive platform for women journalists in the FCT.
