The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has advocated for gender inclusive energy policies and clean energy initiatives in shaping Nigeria’s energy future and its impact on women’s lives.
The acting National President of NCWS, Mrs Geraldine Etuk made the appeal during a visit to the Director General (DG) of Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha on Wednesday, 20th of October 2024 in Abuja

Mrs Etuk noted that “as the umbrella organization for women’s groups in Nigeria, NCWS has been at the forefront of advocating for women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, and economic independence since 1958. Today, we recognize the Energy Commission’s critical role in shaping Nigeria’s energy future and its impact on women’s lives.

“We acknowledge the Energy Commission’s efforts to increase energy access, particularly in rural areas. The Council has continuously followed your antecedents since your assumption in office in making sure that Nigeria women enjoy clean energy, which promotes their health and economic empowerment.
“we acknowledged your Clean Energy initiatives as follows: Pioneered clean cooking advocacy and launched Clean Cooking Wood Stove initiative, Distribution of low-emission wood stoves to women in Kurudu, Mararaba Nasarawa State, the initiative ultimately guarantee safer environment.

The ANP, however, emphasized the need to prioritize women’s concerns in energy policy and programming. “Women are disproportionately affected by energy poverty, and their participation in the energy sector is crucial for sustainable development.”
According to her, “as an organization has implemented various initiatives to promote women’s empowerment, including: Education and Vocational Training-Enhancing girls’ education and women’s skills development. Healthcare Services-Improving access to quality healthcare for women and children, Economic Empowerment – Supporting women’s entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.

While appreciating the Commission on the feet achieved so far in women inclusivity, she appeals for consideration of gender integration in energy policy and programming and promotes women’s participation in the energy sector.
Responding, the Director General pledged his support to collaborate with NCWS in promoting more women’s participation in the energy sector and empowerment.
He promised to support in organising training and workshops for the women on skills that are in line with the energy sector
Highpoint of the visit was the decoration of the DG with an awards of a “He for She” Gender Champion Ambassador.
