The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) Nigeria, under the leadership of its National President, Princess Edna D. D. Azura, F.icap, in collaboration with SOHO24 Foundation, founded by Amb. Christy Opara, MON, joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child in Abuja.
The event, held under the theme “Empowering the Girl Child Through Sport Development, Education and Performance,” focused on promoting the rights, education, empowerment and overall development of the girl child.
The programme brought together about 500 schoolgirls, who benefited from an engaging and impactful day of learning, sports and empowerment. The event provided the girls with opportunities to gain knowledge, develop confidence, showcase their talents and understand the importance of education and sports in achieving their full potential.
A major highlight of the celebration was a novelty football match between the NCWS Nigeria Team and the SOHO24 Foundation Team, with the NCWS Nigeria Team emerging victorious.
In support of the educational development of the girls, NCWS Nigeria donated 40-leaf exercise books to the participating schoolgirls. The Founder of SOHO24 Foundation, Amb. Christy Opara, MON, also donated exercise books to the girls, further demonstrating her commitment to supporting education and empowering the girl child.
SOHO24 Foundation also empowered the girls through knowledge-sharing, sports development and educational activities, encouraging them to build confidence, discover their talents and aspire to brighter futures.
The event further highlighted the need to end child marriage and invest in the rights, education and empowerment of the girl child as essential steps towards building a safer, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
