Nigeria, Hungary Set to Strengthen Diplomatic and Economic Relations

Nigeria has congratulated Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, following his inauguration after the country’s parliamentary elections.


In a statement issued by the Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja on Sunday, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended warm congratulations to the Hungarian leader after his swearing-in ceremony held at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 9, 2026.


Nigeria also congratulated the Tisza Party on its victory in the April 12 parliamentary elections, expressing confidence in the new administration’s ability to serve the Hungarian people effectively.


The Federal Government described the political transition in Hungary as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey, noting that it reflects the importance of democratic participation, constitutional governance and peaceful transfer of power in strengthening public institutions and trust.


According to the statement, Nigeria and Hungary have continued to enjoy cordial diplomatic relations built on mutual respect, constructive engagement and international cooperation.


The ministry noted that both nations have expanded bilateral cooperation in education, agriculture, trade and investment, science and technology, energy and capacity development over the years.


Nigeria particularly acknowledged Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes, which it said have played a vital role in promoting stronger people-to-people ties between citizens of both countries.


The Federal Government further welcomed Prime Minister Magyar’s commitment to enhancing Hungary’s engagement within Europe while promoting democratic governance, regional stability and economic growth.


Nigeria reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the new Hungarian administration to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation within multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and other global platforms.


The statement added that the Government and people of Nigeria wish Prime Minister Magyar and the Hungarian government success in office, while expressing hope for continued peace, stability and prosperity for the people of Hungary.
