The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sorrow over the death of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir of the State of Qatar, who passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described the late Father Amir as an exceptional statesman and visionary leader whose reign as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 transformed the Gulf nation into a globally respected economic and diplomatic force. The Ministry noted that his enduring legacy of modernization, national development, and commitment to international cooperation would continue to inspire future generations.

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed heartfelt condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar over the painful loss.
The Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar during this period of national mourning, praying for the peaceful repose of the late Father Amir and for Almighty God to grant his family, the Qatari leadership, and the entire nation the strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The statement underscored the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Qatar, expressing confidence that the enduring friendship between both countries would continue to flourish in honour of the late leader’s legacy of peace, development, and international partnership.
